"Full circle." (We whispered that to one another as we comforted our sweet, loving and loyal companion of 13 years.)
In many ways we think he waited to peacefully let go until we made our way back to Iowa. He, in many ways, symbolized the beginning of our "marital" life together; unknowingly the impact he would leave on our hearts.
On June 20, 2009, Jamie took me for a walk at Raccoon River. Near the end, we approached a large box containing a black, little puppy with one ear flopped back--pleading to be held. A letter was enclosed explaining the need for a home, a strong union and a family to grow alongside. He fit perfectly in the palm of my hand--a feeling I can still sense when reminiscing of that day. That afternoon, after getting all new puppy supplies, Jamie took "us" on our very first family walk in the Greenbelt and that is where he proposed.
The years ahead each had their own monumental moments, challenges and change of direction. Yet, there he was as loyal and willing as ever to get us through each transition. From Iowa 2009 to Iowa 2022, Scrubs traveled 4,042.6 miles and lived in 5 different states. But it wasn't just his ability to be transient or easy going.
Scrubs' disposition was always of comfort. He accomplished this not only for us, but also as a Certified AKS Therapy dog that visited cancer stricken children and provided joy to the elderly. He was in so many ways the perfect "peace" we both needed. He was the small, but mighty protector that kept me company during the lonely nights through med school. He was the guardian over my belly with every single pregnancy. He was the best snuggler--always having to lay his back up against something and then letting out a deep sigh. He was a puppy that never wanted to grow up, especially when chasing him in the yard. But most of all, he gave us a sense of "home" no matter where we lived or how long Jamie was away. And in many ways we all took him for granted--his ability to just accept, love, console and give without expecting much in return (maybe just a belly rub, a slice of cheese or a spoon of Jif peanut butter). Our conversations never needed words (not human, I know); but it was in the silence and solace he provided, the tilt of his head and the way he looked directly into your soul that made him so special--so fiercely loved by our family. You were much more than “just a dog” —you will forever be a symbol of perseverance, growth and tenacity.
Placing you where the sun always shines. Just like you loved. We will miss you, Scrubbies.
